Ready to be schooled on early learning? Join us for our first CivicCon Acadiana event of 2023, when we welcome Dr. Ronald Ferguson, founder of The Basics – a strategy for whole communities to support vibrant learning and brain development among infants and toddlers.

Dr. Ferguson is an MIT-trained economist whose research focuses on economic, social, and educational challenges. He has been on the faculty at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government since 1983. As director of the Achievement Gap Initiative (AGI) at Harvard, Dr. Ferguson developed a program called the Boston Basics. Now renamed simply The Basics, the project has moved out of Harvard into a nonprofit organization, The Basics, Inc., and implementation has spread to more than three-dozen other cities in The Basics Learning Network.

Dr. Ferguson will make the case for why these communities have embraced The Basics principles to raise awareness and build capacity around early brain development. Research shows 80% of brain development occurs before age 3, and learning gaps can appear before age 2. That’s why programs like The Basics, which recognize that education begins at home, are so critical to encourage parents and help communities work together to create a great environment for kids to grow up.
